World Garden Carnival Jan 2011

Its time again for the Blog Carnival hosted by Fer of My Little Garden in Japan! This time it is called World Garden Carnival and the theme is New Year Gardening Resolutions. I have so many plans for my small garden and what more auspicious time to implement it than this new year 2011! Maybe not all at one go...I will do them in stages, since it will involve a lot of physical work. Im a lone gardener at home, it will be quite a task to do them alone, a back-breaking job indeed!

This year Im making new raised beds for my new vegetables. I have started yesterday since it was a gloomy Sunday and quite cool to work. Im going to plant my greens here like Pak Choy, Amaranth, coriander, lettuce and many more. I have sown the seeds and waiting for them to germinate to transplant them in this new bed. Im soo excited to see my new beds with greens this year!

This is only the first bed...30 bags of soils went into making it!

More beds coming up soon..those recycled plastics bags were placed there to kill the weeds. Right at the end there, is my mengkudu tree where there will be another project in my plan.

4 pumpkin seedlings were planted right at the end of the bed, so that when they grow, their trailing plants will have plenty of space on the grass next to it and dont get entangled with other plants on the bed. Another 3 seedling were placed near the pergola. I want to train them to climb the pergola as shown in Laman Sayur @ MAHA 2010 in Segalanya Tentang Tumbuhan blog where gourds and luffa were trained to climb the pergola. It was really amazing to see them!

my plant 'hospital' will be spruced up a bit...

Under my mengkudu tree where its shady, I placed my plants that need to recuperate from either my neglect or some other ailments they suffer. Tough some plants do need a shady place since they are quite delicate like my begonia, blackberry, rosemary, thyme. stevia etc. After seeing Go Away Im Gardening, Amy's rock garden under a shady tree, I would like to do the same under the mengkudu tree. I have a lot of river rocks accumulated since I started my gardening which were placed outside the fence as a border, which will go nicely into making my new rock garden. As a third project, those rocks will be replaced by new bricks as a border and a new raised flower bed will emerge elsewhere, to replace an old one. Thats about all for now, probably I will be implementing some other things as the year goes by....if I dont break my back first by all those physical things I have to do!
Anyway, why not take a look at Fer's blog and see what he and other bloggers around the world are doing for their new year gardening resolutions, you might get some ideas for your own garden. Or why not join this Carnival and post us your new year plans to improve your garden! Happy Gardening!

I too am a lone gardener in my household. 30 bags of soil is a lot plus you still have work ahead. Looks great though.

I see that begonia under your tree now! Wow very pretty and the blush is looking good. You have a great gardening hand :-D Your plants look excellent. But for those begonia hybrids, they are really not adaptable to changes in their surroundings. Happy revamping your garden!

Wow! The bed is beautiful. Apart from the 30 packs of soil, how many bricks did you use? Looking forward to see your rock garden. I have been shifting rocks around.

Yes Milka, I think so but slowly laa, Im still experimenting with the new beds, I feel like they are too shallow maybe another layer of bricks should be better..but more soils to be added..budget, budget! You old? I thought you are just in your late 20's! Me too, Im prone to backaches but still whats to be done must be done, or else who's going to do it? Upah orang? hmmmm...budget, budget!

Thank you for visiting my blog and also leaving a note.

It looks like you are off to a good start on your project for 2011. I wish you all the best in your gardening projects.

You have been busy! Did you do that in one day? That is a good way to get rid of the weeds without having to pull them all. Also, thanks for the link. I bet you will have fun putting your rock garden together. That's great that you already have the rocks accumulated.
I can't wait to start working in the garden. ~Amy

It's great to see the progress with your garden beds. I have used the same trick for killing weeds/grass, except I usually use newspaper which decomposes fast. Good luck! I will check back soon. --Beth

Solitude Rising, thank you..the new vegetable beds will be my focal point this year. Hopefully my project will run smoothly as planned since this is my first attempt at growing green vegetables.

Yes Amy, have been busy to build my first new raised bed, I did that within 2 hrs! Thank you, I will start on the rock garden after completing my vegetable beds. Cant wait to get it started too..

Thank you Beth for that tip, maybe will try that when we have hot and dry season. But at the moment, its been raining almost everyday, I think plastic bags are more practical.

Wow, you are all out for a new garden! Wish you success with your new plans. I'm changing my front potted garden to a herb and veggie garden too, but doing stages at a time. Since some of the flower plants has died on me, I'm planning to grow baby tomatoes which has just sprouted! Hope I have more success this time round with the tomatoes! Thanks for stopping by my kitchen, left a comment there for you!

Thank you Fer for hosting this Garden Carnival where all bloggers can exchange ideas and tips for a better result in our gardens. Looking forward for more Carnivals!

Yes kitchen flavours, my target and project this year to plant more greens. I found tomatoes are easy to grow and look after and produce good harvest. Thank you for the reply to my question in your kitchen. Hope you have better luck in your garden this year!

Great to see your projects. So funny, I have a little plant hospital under a tree, and I call the plants my hospital plants. My friend often comes over and adopts them.

p3chandan said...

Carolyn what a coincidence, we both have hospital for our plants! I send my 'healed' plants out again into the world, and take in new ones to recuperate!:)

I like the idea of raised beds for the veggies. I think we will go with raised beds in The Garden Spot. We had them at the old house and they worked great. good luck. cheers. ann

Good luck on your projects.. Raised beds are a must where I live because of the hard, compacted, rocky, clay dirt, your plants will love the wonderful soil your giving them :)

p3chandan said...

Ann and Rebecca..After being in Blotanical and seen raised beds in other parts of the world and their benefits, Im opting for them too this year. Thanks to both of you for giving me support and encouragement!

Excellent projects for the new year -- love the beds you made (that's a lot of bags of soil)!

I'd love it if you'd participate in the next issue of How to Find Great Plants. If you don't have time to write a new post you can use one you've already written (such as the one on miniature morning glories):
