Cute tiny miniatures

Nowadays, nurseries have come out with new versions and hybrids of a lot of flowers not only for orchids. Look at these two blooms, same type of flowers but different version. They are both morning glory, one is the normal size, while the other is a tiny miniature! Could not resist buying the plant last Hari Raya, although I have the normal one growing wild on my fence, as the tiny mini blooms look so cute and adorable.

compare the size..normal and miniature

so tiny and cute

Some features are a bit different though between the two. The normal size morning glory the flower form a long tube so that the stamens are concealed inside the tube. The bees, the main polinators, will have to go half way inside, in order to pollinate the flowers or collect the nectar. While the miniatures, the stamens are right outside the petals and I think the bees are definitely bigger than the flower!

see the tiny plant, all balled up in a small pot for hanging

However, both flowers will only last for 2 days the most, will change to pinkish/light purple around the edges, close off their petals and drop off. In order to have lasting blooms on the plant, they have to be 'deadhead' just like petunia, in order for new buds to form. To maintain the overall structure of the plant, you have to make sure the creeper entwine each other and form into a ball. What else the nurseries will come out with next!

I remember you fancy cute mini pots/vases too, right? 2 days isn't that bad. Hibiscus only last for one day. I like the ball look.

Pretty bloom colour. I think a lot of miniatures one are available nowadays to cater for people who love gardening but don't have much space.

Morning glory has become one of my favorite plants now because it has almost no pest. I'm still looking for the blue/purple morning glory like yours in the nursery. Your morning glories are stunning!
By the way, i don't see any seed inside the flowers (seed pods) of my elephant ears plant. Sorry, i'm not good in collecting seeds!

AYIMG, yes they are pretty in blue, though not sure whether they can grow at your place there.

Makarimi, Malar.. I love them both for their bright blue colour. Malar morning glory used be weeds growing on the roadside, but now they are grown and sold in nurseries.

Yes One, I love cute things sometimes, but I love normal size things too!:)

Diana thank you, maybe you are right, because of the space constraint, they develop miniature plants, flowers and trees!

Milka, its ok about the seeds. If only you are very near here, I could try and propagate the morning glory for you, though I havent done it before. Its quite risky to send plants by the mail, they might get crushed or die on the way..

Rainfield, I hope not because there's too many plants growing wild on my fence - morning glory, pokok sireh and weeds!

If i stay near to your house, i would want not only morning glory you know.., LOL. Thank you for the thought anyway. I will search for myself in the local nurseries, and i think i will treasure the plant more if i found one. Susah susah dapat, mesti treasure sikit ler.. hehe.

Terung somehow has similar flower, with petals fused together forming umbrella like flower. Even colour is similar... The plant above should look nice in a hanging pot...

Milka, I dont mind if you want a bit of everything in my garden..:)

Yes Bangchik, the flower look almost similar except that this one is really small and the colour is blue while eggplant flower is light purple and it is actually grown in a pot for hanging.

I really love morning glories. They are one of my favorite blue plants. I always grow them from seed. I like this little one very much and I never heard of it before now. I will be looking in to it, thanks.

I have a real fondness for morning glories, as they remind me of my childhood when we had them growing on our fence. The new tiny ones are very cute!

Deb, Steph, kitchen flavours..thank you they are indeed very pretty and cute. Steph, they dont occupy too much space 'cos they are in a pot, you can either hang it or put in a corner.
