Fanciful Portulacas

Portulacas are so a common a plant, you can almost found them in most garden here. They are low-growing and spreading plants and very easy to grow by using stem propagation. You can just pinch and stick it in the soil and soon you have thriving plants. Portulacas Grandiflora are commonly known as Moss Rose or Sun Plant but here they are called Japanese Rose. They come in so many beautiful cultivars about 100 of them and bright colourful blooms, whether double or single layers. Here are some of the varieties grown in my garden, either in hanging pots or on the ground.

dark pink double layer

very small yellow blooms

single layer Yubi pink

Sunnyside Yellow

Sunnyside Flame (peach)

2 colours in a pot - Sunnyside yellow and peach (double layer)

Fairytale Cinderella Orange

Fairytale Cinderella Pink

Fairytale Cinderella with 2 colour combinations in one pot

Single layer Yubi Yellow flower

Yubi Yellow

the Yubi varieties are those with big single layer blooms

white double layer

Yubi white single layer

single and double layer white portulacas in one pot

These fanciful colourful portulacas are shown for Blooming Friday themed Fanciful hosted by Katarina of Roses and Stuff and Tootsie/Glenda's Flaunt Your Flowers/Fertiliser Friday. Lets take a peek at their gardens and see what's blooming this Friday.

Jen, Amy they are quite hardy, low maintenance and easy to grow plants. And they love the sun too much! The Fairytale Cinderella seems quite common in the warmer part of your country. Here we seldom see them, so Im lucky to have found them! You too have a great weekend!

I like them and I keep one over the winter in the greenhouse so it can flower the following year. I love the bright colours best.
Have a lovely weekend.

Very cute flowers. In my country we call them chisme(gossip) because they spread so easily

p3chandan said...

Easygardener, its nice to know that you can keep them warm throughout winter. Spring is coming soon, so yours will be blooming soon. You too have a good weekend!

Really Fer? An apt name for them cos they really can spread around! Here they are known as Japanese rose, I dont know why!

I planted some of the Yubis this past summer and really loved them, they were trouble-free. The only issue I had with them is that they did not open until late morning and were closed by the time I got home from work, so I could only enjoy them on my day off.

p3chandan said...

Les hope you are enjoying your day with those beautiful Yubis today!

Lady, thank you. Maybe its too much water, they should have well-drained soil. Or not enough sun for your portulacas.

Thank you Debs, they have so many varieties and in all lovely colours!

Joy, I cant choose, just love them all!

Thank you Gela, you too have a nice weekend!

Donna, thank you. These are just the tip of the iceberg so to speak..they have about 100 variaties and amazing colour combinations!

Hello Birgitta, thank you. They are very easy to grow either from seeds or stem cuttings and they love lots of sunshine! Thanks for dopping by my garden, happy weekend!

Katarina said...

These pretty flowers are new to me. I guess they wouldn't like our climate. But how lovely with such pretty things that so easily can be propagated.

p3chandan said...

Katarina, you can have them during your spring, summer and autumn and during winter you can bring them in the house or your greenhouse. Although they love full sunshine, they can survive in semi shade too. They look lovely as a low border or in pots or window boxes when their lovely blooms open up in the morning.
